Have you been eyeing a gadget to up your skincare routine? The most famous at the moment include the Clarisonic Mia and the Foreo Luna but we now have a new contender in town!
First up, thank you to Butterfly Project Malaysia for this opportunity to review the Nion Beauty Opus and to Nion Beauty for this opportunity too! They even included a shower sponge scrunchie, which I have passed on to my mother because she loves these.
Let's jump right into the actual products because I have been testing these out for almost a full month and I have a lot of thoughts on these. So what is Nion Beauty? Nion Beauty is a USA company where researchers combine Japanese technology with South Korean research (talk about multi-nationalities!)
The procucts are made with silicone bristles, which I personally prefer because silicone tends to be more antibacterial and you can easily rinse it to clean it. This is why I do not own a Clarisonic, because I am paranoid about the bristles and the need to replace the brush head all the time.
Starting off with the disposable and therefore cheapest option you can get, the Nion Beauty Opus 2 Go is RM140.90 for 3 pieces. They each last for about 10 full 3 minutes uses, which will take you through your holiday. Even when the brush no longer vibrates when you hold it down, you can still continue using it as a manual cleansing brush.
So something you will see a lot in this blog post and across the range, is the Negative Ion. Because impurities naturally have a positive charge, negative ion actually binds to these positively-charged impurities and aid in removal. They are said to also strengthen the body's autonomic nerves and reinforces collagen. I must admit that these are all research and you are not likely to see any changes unless you use the product long term.
While you normally get 3 in a pack, I received the white one (which is more of a cream colour) and it comes in a little pouch which you can travel with to help keep it clean and hygienic.
Some people will love and prefer the disposable version but personally, I feel quite guilty using any disposable products. I am actually not sure as to how to recycle this, especially since there are batteries (2 button cell batteries) in there as well, which I am unable to remove. This is the most convenient option and the easiest to travel with, but for those of you who are trying to be more eco-conscious, I will have to point you towards the other product instead of this.
Not to deprive the rest of you who might want something small to try, this is really dinky.
The brush bristles are soft on the skin and you do not feel that it is abrasive whatsoever but the skin feels cleaner when you have used this alongside a cleanser.
The actual product, which hailing Japanese technology and South Korean research, is made in China. you can remove the little sticker, and that is the exact spot to press for the vibration to begin and then you can go to town on your face. I tend to focus on my nose area which is my blackhead problem area.
The next option you can get is the Nion Beauty Opus Express - RM187.90, which is very reasonably priced. If you are curious, you can get the Opus Daily, Opus Luxe or Opus Elite as well! I will be making reference to some of the different functions you can get in the other ones as opposed to this particular model.
The packaging is informative and you can use this in the shower (no worries of any shocks) but do make sure you get 2 AA batteries first! There are 3 speed settings, which are all controlled by the power button.
You also get a travel bag if you plan to take this with you while you travel. The device actually feels quite lightweight, which is good for travel since it will not weigh you down much, but it does take away from the luxurious feeling.
I personally love that the Nion Beauty Opus Express has a handle to hold, as it really makes cleansing easy. While the packaging states you can use any cleansing gel or soap, Foreo recommends not using any mud or clay cleansers with their silicone cleansing device (the Luna) so I have opted to avoid using my clay cleanser with this Opus Express as well, just in case I damage the bristles.
Now, some people will like that this uses batteries, but I personally do not. Depending on what you prefer, the Opus Daily also uses batteries, while the Opus Luxe and Opus Elite has a rechargeable base. Those are definitely my preference when it comes to devices. I tend to prefer anything that allows me to charge up than having to always use batteries. I think it is more environmentally friendly to charge products up instead of creating more waste.
Now, I thought I would bring in my Foreo Luna Go to compare the sizes for you to see. The main difference is that the Nion Beauty Opus 2 Go is a lot smaller and lighter to tote around.
The little bag that is included with the Foreo is a lot more luxurious, but for the amount you pay for it, is it really worth it?
Now to compare the Foreo Luna Go with the Nion Beauty Opus Express. I apologise that I have not been able to locate my Foreo Luna to compare with this because that is more of a full size Foreo and this is more of a travel size Foreo.
The main difference is that the Nion Beauty Opus Express has a handle which I find easier to use to cleanse my face. It does feel lighter, and not as luxurious or sturdy as the Foreo Luna Go.
It is also a non-rechargeable version, compared to the Foreo Luna Go. The Foreo Luna Go also has an anti-ageing mode at the back of the device, to help your skincare absorb better. This particular version of Nion Beauty Opus does not have this function, but the Opus Daily, Opus Luxe and Opus Elite, all have this added function.
Now, let's actually show you how to use the Nion Beauty Opus Express! Let's take a short moment to appreciate these super cute Etude House bunny ears headband please, I bought it off Althea and I love it.
First things first, make sure you have batteries for your device.
While you can use most cleansers, I have picked the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser because it is my current one and you cannot go wrong with a gentle gel cleanser.
Do not attempt to put the gel on the device, the best way is to actually wet your face and then apply the cleansing gel all over your face, as shown in the picture.
This is the point where you whip our your Nion Beauty Opus Express and switch it on (just click the power button).
The Nion Beauty Opus Express does not have an integrated timer so you do not actually get a small pause to tell you to switch to another area of your face. You just have to use it in circular motions all around the face. The Foreo Luna Go has this function, as do the more premium Nion Beauty Opus Luxe and Nion Beauty Opus Elite.
After a set 3 minutes, the product will stop. If you prefer a gentler cleanse, you can click the power button again as it starts off with the most intense vibration and you get an option of 3 speeds, in descending order.
I tend to concentrate this on my problematic clogged pores area a little more without going too crazy.
You can actually buy this on quite a few places so I shall attempt to list the online links below and where you can get them in store (Watsons) if you prefer to are :-
1. IOI City Mall @ Putrajaya
2. Mytown/Pavillion KL/Suria KLCC/Ampang Point @ Kuala Lumpur
3. Sunway Pyramid/ Â Aeon Kepong/Aeon Cheras Selatan/One Utama @ Selangor
4. Gurney Plaza/Queensbay Mall @ Penang
5. Kinta City Shopping @ Perak
6. Sky Avenue @ Pahang
7. Dataran Pahlawan @ Melaka
8. Aeon Seremban 2 @ Negeri Sembilan
9. Bintang Miri @ Sarawak
If you are not opposed to online shopping, these are the links and sites to go to :-
Now for the most important question, would I purchase this? Personally, I would probably go for the Nion Beauty Opus Luxe of Opus Elite, which retails at almost RM600 for the latter. A Foreo Luna would set you back about RM900 but you can get the Foreo Luna Mini or Foreo Luna Go for a lot cheaper.
The devices are definitely priced at a much better price point than the Foreo (I will not go into Clarisonic as I think it is a different product altogether) and frankly, you get better value for money for what you pay. I wish this came out a bit earlier so I did not just drop my money on the Foreo Luna Go. However if you already own a Foreo, do you need this? Absolutely not. If you want to try cleansing device, would I recommend Foreo or Nion Beauty? Nion Beauty, without a doubt. Now go get yours.
